Children are not small adults. Your child does not think with a “grown up-adult brain. “ He lives in a completely different world, with different values, different interests, goals, motivation. Their sense of self and their relationship with the world around them radically varies from that of an adult’s. Children are egocentric beings. They want what they want when they want, how they want and…the world revolves around them. Oops, on second thought, maybe that really isn’t too radical from some adults. Although this may appear self-centered and self-absorbed, do not attach such a definition. It indicates their position on the developmental timeline. A 10-year-old cannot be expected to think, make choices and behave as a 40-year-old. A child’s job is to grow and develop into an adult. They do not begin that way.

Developmental Psychology is a highly specialized field which concentrates on the developing child. Developmental Psychology can be further divided into subspecialties such as Infant Development, Early Childhood Development, and Adolescent Development. Years of research and diligent study has given us a foundation of knowledge and an understanding of the developing child as we have never before had. And with continued and ongoing research our understanding and knowledge is ever increasing. Although not a prerequisite for conception nor should any parent be expected to prep with years of study prior to their child’s birth, it is definitely helpful to have such resources available.   These resources can assist in de-mystifying, de-stressing the job of parents and overall make it more manageable. This is the very goal of this material. It is not being written as a dissertation or any formal discourse for presentation. It is written to and for parents simply and straightforwardly to assist them in managing their child’s behavior more effectively and bring more peace and harmony to their families, their homes, and their lives.
